Dr. Kaye Whitehead to speak
Noted peace activist, educator and author Dr. Karsonya (Kaye) Wise Whitehead will speak Evansville’s 22nd-Annual Women’s Equality Day Luncheon on Wednesday, August 28, 2024.
YWCA Evansville will host the luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Old National Events Plaza.
Whitehead will speak on “Acts of Courage: Small Steps to Freedom.” Founding executive director of The Karson Institute for Race, Peace & Social Justice, Whitehead teaches Communication and African and African-American Studies at Loyola University Maryland.
An Emmy-nominated filmmaker and award-winning broadcaster, she hosts the radio talk show “Today with Dr. Kaye” in Baltimore, Md.
“The late John Lewis said that the vote ‘is the most powerful non-violent tool we have in a democracy.’” Erika Taylor, YWCA Evansville CEO, said. “For over 20 years, our community has celebrated Women’s Equality Day to commemorate the hard-won right for all women to vote, and remind us that women still face systemic inequities across America. We look forward to hearing Dr. Whitehead share how acts of courage bring us all closer to freedom.”
The celebration is being presented by YWCA Evansville in conjunction with Stepping Up Evansville, which will bestow awards for outstanding contributions to our region by two distinguished women leaders. Stepping Up Evansville will announce the award recipients prior to the event.
Women’s Equality Day commemorates the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, celebrates women’s achievements, and recognizes the continued fight for equal rights. The celebration is being presented by YWCA Evansville in conjunction with Stepping Up Evansville, which will bestow awards for outstanding contributions to our region by two distinguished women leaders.

About Dr. Kaye Whitehead
Karsonya (Kaye) Wise Whitehead, Ph.D. is the founding director of The Karson Institute for Race, Peace & Social Justice and a professor of Communication and African and African American Studies at Loyola University Maryland. She is a three-time New York Emmy-nominated documentary filmmaker, and the award-winning host of “Today with Dr. Kaye,” her daily talk show on WEAA-FM in Baltimore, Md. Dr. Whitehead is the author of four books, a K-12 master teacher in African American history, an award-winning curriculum writer and lesson plan developer, and an award-winning former Baltimore City middle school teacher. The recipient of many prestigious awards for her work as a peace activist, scholar, filmmaker, writer, and poet, Dr. Whitehead is one of the country’s most sought-after keynote speakers, having given over 500 keynote talks worldwide. She received her doctorate in Language, Literacy, and Culture from the University of Maryland; her M.A. from the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies at the University of Notre Dame; and her B.A. in History from Lincoln University. Spotlighting the power of everyday people to change the world is one of her passions. She has made a career of fighting for change one small step at a time.
