Women’s Equality Centennial Celebration will focus on SuperMom Tools as it continues an online panel discussion at noon on Wednesday, May 19, to continue our celebration of the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment guaranteeing women the right to vote, but also to say “It’s Your Turn.”
The panel discussions will lead up to the annual Women’s Equality Day celebration luncheon on August 26, featuring Astronaut Mae Jemison.
Meanwhile, the series, It’s Our Turn: Stepping Up Together, will continue with the panel discussion SuperMom Tools from noon to 1 p.m. May 19. It is free and available on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/steppinguptoequality.
This session is designed to offer tools for busy mothers who are taking on new roles and challenges as they help navigate their children and families through the changes in brought on by pandemic disruptions. We will also look at the childcare costs and needs in our community.
May 19’s panel, SuperMom Tools, will feature Karese Johnson, Community Impact Officer at United Way of Southwestern Indiana, Aleisha Sheridan, CEO of 4C of Southern Indiana, DeVon Simon, assistant principalof Glenwood Leadership Academy and Sloane Standley, Marketing Strategist for Midwest Communications.Shelley Kirk, WEHT/WTVW anchor, will moderate.
Karese Johnson, a native of Evansville, is the wife of Christopher, an Army SFC, and mother of three, Kanada, 17, Korbin, 14, and Kortlyn, 12. As Community Impact Officer at United Way of Southwestern Indiana, Karese works with community volunteers and non-profit organizations to serve individuals and families. Johnson has a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from University of Southern Indiana and a Master’s of Business Administration from University of Phoenix, and has worked in both for-profit financial institutions and non-profit organizations
Between juggling her children’s schedules and her own community obligations and career, tough choices were made over the years. While maintaining a consistent career hasn’t been easy through her husband’s frequent deployments, her mindset with regards to employment and community service has been consistent. Her service mottos are, “Do what you can, when you can do it” and “You can have it all, just not all at the same time”.
Karese is a Sustaining member of the Junior League of Evansville, which she credits for her development as a servant leader. In addition to her family and volunteering, Johnson enjoys drawing, painting, and tending to a vegetable garden.
Aleisha Sheridan is CEO of 4C of Southern Indiana, providing early childhood education resources and support to families, early educators, and communities in 28 counties. She is a Kentucky native with both bachelor and master’s degree in Speech Pathology from the University of Kentucky and a second master’s degree in educational administration from Murray State University. She formerly was the Early Childhood Administrator for the Henderson County School district. She led the district task force for the construction, design, and programming of the Thelma B. Johnson Early Learning Center. Sheridan has published research in Early Childhood Education with the University of Chicago. Throughout her career she has been focused on using data to drive decision-making.
DeVon Simon is the assistant principal at Glenwood Leadership Academy. She’s an Evansville native who not only taught English and social studies in Indianapolis and Atlanta, Ga., but also taught English for three years in Beijing, fulfilling her dream to live overseas. She’s a graduate of North High School, Ball State University and has a Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction from Central Michigan University in Atlanta. and received an administrative license in school leadership from the University of Southern Indiana. She and her husband, Jerry, have two boys, Jerry and Jackson.
Sloane Standley is a Marketing Strategist for Midwest Communications. She and her husband, Ronnie Beasley, have two children Maddox, 13, Leighton, 15, two dogs, and a hive of bees. Sloane is a champion of equality. She is a member of the YWCA Evansville board. Her other passions include photography, frugality, and the Caribbean Sea.
