Joanna Trainer

After 34 years as an elementary school teacher, Sister Joanna Trainer started a second career, which spanned more than 20 years and touched the lives of more than 1,000 homeless women and children. In the early 1980s, Trainer and her friends started a soup kitchen at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. When she discovered that many of the soup kitchen patrols stayed on the streets at night, she worked to start a residential center.
