About Us

Stepping Up celebrates women in the Tri-State of every race, class and ethnic background who have made historic contributions to the growth and strength of our community in countless recorded and unrecorded ways.

They worked not only to secure their own rights of suffrage and equal opportunity, but also in the abolitionist movement, the emancipation movement, the industrial labor movement, the civil rights movement, and others, especially the peace movement, which worked to create a more fair and just society for all.

Despite these contributions, the role of local women in history has been consistently overlooked and undervalued. Women Stepping Up is resolved to join nationwide efforts to celebrate women and join national efforts and write women back into history.

STEPPING UP’S RESOLUTION

Whereas, regional women have played and continue to play critical economic, cultural, and social role in every sphere of the life of the community by constituting a significant portion of the labor force working in their homes and throughout the community;

Whereas, Evansville area women have played a unique role throughout the history of the community and nation by providing the majority of the volunteer labor;

Whereas, Tri-State women were particularly important in the establishment of
early charitable, philanthropic, and cultural institutions in our community and have served as early leaders in the forefront of every major progressive social change movement;

Whereas, they have served our country courageously in the military;

Whereas, regional women have been leaders, not only in securing their own rights of suffrage and equal opportunity, but also in the abolitionist movement, the emancipation movement, the industrial labor movement, the civil rights movement, and other movements, especially the peace movement,
which create a more fair and just society for all;

Whereas, despite these contributions, the role of local women in history has been consistently overlooked and undervalued, in the literature, teaching and study of history;

Women Stepping Up is resolved to join nationwide efforts to celebrate women and join efforts and write women back into history.
